Collection Development

Goal: Provide a collection of information resources that will support the identifiable research needs of the university community as well as those of scholars worldwide.

Keep abreast of new features of electronic resources and platforms in order to inform members of the MSU community and to provide quality instruction.

Ongoing. I monitor relevant listservs and blogs and I visited the exhibits hall at ALA Annual and Midwinter to find out about new resources and platforms that may be available.

Keep up to date on issues, developments, resources, materials, trends, events, programs, and classes related to U.S. and international government.

Ongoing.

GPO has announced govinfo.gov which will replace FDsys as the portal for authentic government information.

I attended the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) virtual conference in April 2015 and the in-person conference in October 2015.

I am registered for the FDLP coordinator certificate program offered by the Government Publishing Office (GPO). This program was supposed to take place in October 2015 but was postponed to sometime in 2016; no date has been set yet.

Participate in collection development meetings, projects, and training sessions.

Ongoing. I attend the collections coordinator meetings and the social sciences selectors meetings as my schedule permits.

Evaluate databases and attend vendor demonstrations to help determine suitable purchases.

Ongoing. Proquest has several products that are particularly relevant to my area and may be pursued as my collection budget allows. I supported the subscription to voxgov, a government information database from East View.

Goal: Maintain the international documents collection by selecting, purchasing, curating, and weeding appropriate print and electronic materials.

Evaluate the international documents collections and work to eliminate gaps and enhance our collection to meet the needs and research foci of our patrons.

Ongoing. I continue to evaluate our collection and look for appropriate items to purchase

Review and update the international documents collection development policy annually.

Attend biweekly collections coordinators meetings.

Work with Mary Jo Zeter on maintaining the European Union collection.

Goal: Maintain the Canadian documents collection by curating and weeding appropriate print and electronic materials.

Review the Canadian documents collection and search for electronic equivalents.

Goal: Successfully administer the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) at MSU by selecting, curating, and weeding the federal government documents collection and following all FDLP legal requirements.

Review and update the Federal Documents collection development policy annually.

Ongoing. I will continue to review and update this policy annually.

Oversees the annual assessment of our FDLP depository profile.

Ongoing. I reviewed our item selection profile in September 2015.

Foster a collaborative relationship with our regional depository library, the University of Minnesota (UMN).

Ongoing. I am currently working on a collaborative project with UMN, the Library of Michigan, MSU, and Google to send federal government documents from the Library of Michigan to Google for destructive digitization. The pilot part of this project has been successfully completed and the full project, with a pick list of 300,000 items will begin in the spring 2016. This project will require myself and other MSU staff to help LOM retrieve and process these items for Google.

Attend and participate in virtual meetings with our regional library.

Ongoing. I attend the quarterly virtual meetings with our regional.

Complete the FDLP Coordinator Certificate program.

Not completed. This program was supposed to be done in October 2015 but GPO postponed the fall cohort, stating that it will occur early 2016.

Evaluate and weed the print federal documents collection, following FDLP guidelines and requirements.

Ongoing. I reviewed a list of 3788 cataloged government documents that are housed in Remote Storage. In addition to reviewing the research potential and relevance to our collection to determine if items should be kept, I also searched the University of Minnesota’s catalog to see if they have the item per their disposal procedures. After reviewing, I have a list of items that can be safely withdrawn from Remote, a list of items that must first be offered to UMN before disposal, and a list of items to be kept.

Complete the 2015 FDLP Biennial Survey.

Done. I submitted the 2015 FDLP Biennial Survey in December 2015.

Goal: Gain appropriate knowledge of U.S. government resources and agencies to provide high-quality, specialized reference services to the MSU community.

Attend training events and meetings hosted by the Government Publishing Office (GPO) to learn about government agencies and the services and resources that they offer.

Ongoing. I attended the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) virtual conference in April 2015 and the in-person conference in October 2015.

Attend webinars and training events hosted by other groups such as the Government Documents Round Table and our regional depository to learn about effective searching techniques and how to find government information.

Attend the Depository Library Council (DLC) and Federal Depository Library Conference, October 19-21, 2015 in Arlington, VA.

Present a poster at the DLC/FDLP Conference, October 19-21, 2015.

Done. I presented a poster entitled “Seeing Through the Congressional Record” at this conference and I was asked by GPO to do a webinar about text analysis and government information for April 2016.

Service to Users

Goal: Promote and facilitate access to MSU Libraries resources by the creation, enhancement, organization, and maintenance of high quality catalog data.

Catalog library resources in assigned formats, creating original bibliographic records, or enhancing inadequate copy catalog records, according to national and local standards and using appropriate cataloging guidelines.

I have been working on processing shelf ready books and have begun working on TLOC H books, finding copy and enhancing the records.

Become familiar with FRBR and RDA.

I’ve watched all of the training webinars from the Library of Congress on FRBR and RDA. I’ve also read all of their slides and training documentation.

Learn to use cataloging tools and technology, such as Classification Web, Cataloger’s Desktop, OCLC Connexion.

While I’ve viewed the OCLC Connexion training videos and have received training on Connexion, Classification Web, and Cataloger’s Desktop from Joshua Barton, I know that there is still a lot that I don’t quite know yet about these tools.

Learn to use and apply MARC Bibliographic and MARC Authority Formats.

Become familiar with OCLC Bibliographic Formats and Expert Community Guidelines.

Learn to use Sierra and Sierra cataloging workflows.

I have completed Sierra training and have learned Sierra cataloging workflows.

Create or enhance quality bibliographic records for materials assigned for cataloging training and review (e.g. shelf ready monographs, French language Africana)

I began working with shelf ready monographs, finding copy and enhancing records when necessary. Since January, I have been working on TLOC H books, including French Africana materials as well as English language monographs, finding copy and enhancing the records to national standards.

Goal: Provide maximum access to resources for our users through high-quality reference services.

Provide reference services at the Main Library Reference Desk and through virtual reference (chat and email).

Ongoing. This year I’ve predominantly had 6 hours of reference work per week. In the fall, I had 4 hours a week due to the change in my secondary and needing additional time to learn cataloging.

Create research guides as needed to help students, faculty, and librarians find information.

Ongoing.

I maintain 22 published guides.

Created a United States Food Law and Regulations libguide with Anita Ezzo.

Created a libguide for the Presidential Election, 2016.

Contribute to the improvement of reference services by sharing news and information that will be helpful to other librarians and our users via reference meetings and the reference blog.

Ongoing. I continue to contribute to the reference blog, by sending emails to the reference email groups, and by sharing information at reference meetings.

Attend reference meetings and training sessions in order to increase my knowledge of researching all subject areas in order to provide more complete answers to patron questions.

Ongoing. I attend reference meetings as my schedule permits.

Goal: Increase campus and peer knowledge of data management issues, services, and best practices.

Help MSU librarians understand issues related to data management and best practices.

Ongoing. I am continually working to promote data management to my colleagues.

Share with outside individuals and other institutions the efforts that the MSU Libraries have taken in regards to data management.

Promote Research Data Management Guidance services to faculty, staff, and students.

Ongoing.

Work with other data librarians to determine gaps in services related to research data management and work with them to create solutions.

Ongoing. Several MSU data/digital librarians and myself are working on a project to analyze successfully funded National Science Foundation (NSF) grant proposals written by MSU faculty. This study will allow us to analyze trends in MSU data management proposals, look for service gaps, and work on trying to expand data management-related services at MSU.

Collection Maintenance

Goal: Organize, maintain, control, preserve, and secure the federal documents collection for maximum utilization.

Evaluate and weed the print collection.

Ongoing. I evaluated 3788 cataloged U.S. documents that are housed in Remote Storage to determine which items should be retained and which items should be withdrawn from the collection. I’ve also withdrawn the print U.S. Serial Set collection from Remote Storage.

Evaluate and assess usage for the various formats that we receive and work to select the best format for usability to encourage the most utilization.

Ongoing. I am working to evaluate our collection and add more materials with an emphasis on electronic items to allow greater access to our collection for distance students/MSU researchers.

Maintain and create relevant libguides about U.S. government information.

Ongoing. I maintain 10 guides related to U.S. government information. I also created a libguide for United States Food Law and Regulations and a guide on the 2016 Presidential Election.

Work with staff at the Library of Michigan, University of Minnesota, Google, and Michigan State University to send U.S. government documents from LOM to Google for destructive digitization.

Ongoing. This project has completed a successful pilot to test the feasibility of collaboratively working to send LOM government documents to Google for destructive digitization. This project will move forward using a picklist of 300,000 titles in the spring/summer 2016. Myself and other MSU library staff will be assisting with this project at LOM, retrieving items, adding item records, and preparing them for shipment to Google.

Hire, train, and supervise student employees who will shelve and maintain the government documents collection.

Ongoing. I hired one new student employee in spring 2015 and currently supervise 2 students that maintain the government documents collection.

Goal: Maintain the international documents collection by selecting, purchasing, curating, and weeding appropriate print and electronic materials.

Evaluate the international documents collections and work to eliminate gaps and enhance our collection to meet the needs and research foci of our patrons.

Ongoing. I’ve been evaluating the usefulness of the newly released United Nations iLibrary product to determine if the subscription cost includes enough content not available for free or only available in print to decide if it would help maximize access to our collection while also limiting the physical footprint of the collection.

Update the international documents collection development policy.

Ongoing. I updated this policy in the fall and will continue to review this policy annually.

Library Promotion

Goal: Promote the use of the Libraries and appropriate information resources.

Promote the MSU Libraries’ resources and services to the MSU community.

Ongoing. I have begun to contribute photos of images/art found in government documents to Katie Diamond, the Social Media Coordinator, in order for her to post the pictures on the Libraries’ Instagram account; this will help promote not only the MSU Libraries on social media, but also highlight our government documents collection.

Create exhibits that highlight both a significant event/topic and the libraries’ collection.

Ongoing. I collaborated with Emily Sanford to create an exhibit about UFOs that was on display on the first floor of the library from June-September 2015.

I submitted an exhibit proposal to Anita Ezzo, asking to create an exhibit in 3 West exhibit cases for the 100th anniversary of the National Parks Service. This was accepted and the exhibit I create for this event will be on display from June-September 2016.

Promote services such as UBorrow to patrons during reference interactions.

Staff the Libraries’ table at the Academic Orientation Program’s resource fair in order to promote the Libraries’ and their services to incoming freshmen and their parents.

Done. I staffed the Libraries’ table at Academic Orientation during the fall 2015.

Participate in the Libraries’ Open House.

Done. I volunteered to hand out passports during the Libraries’ Open House.

Diversity

Goal:  Maintain a diverse staff with the skills to support the Libraries’ goals.

Hire and retain student employees with appropriate skills

I hired 1 new student employee for Government Documents shelving and am now currently supervising 2 students.

Serve under-represented populations through my collection areas, instruction, and liaison.

When evaluating electronic resources for my collection areas, I am aware of issues related to accessibility and consider these issues before purchasing items.

Address library-related social issues through professional activities.

I’ve attended the following Art of Liaison, Instruction, and Selection Series presentations regarding accessibility: Best Practices for LibGuides: Managing Guide Content and Designing Guides for Usability and Accessibility, Introduction to Universal Design for Learning, and Working Towards Accessible Collection.

Professional Development Activities

Goal: Contribute to the development and dissemination of new knowledge.

Participate in professional organizations and scholarly activities.

Ongoing. I have been nominated for several library committees, such as FAC and Nominations Committee, but was not selected.

Ongoing. I presented at two reference meetings, one for Proquest Congressional and the second for voxgov.

Seek opportunities to get involved in the American Library Association’s Government Documents Round Table (GODORT).

Ongoing. I have been added as a member to the GODORT Membership Committee for 2015-2016.

Participate in the Libraries’ mentoring program.

Done. I completed my mentoring year with Denise Forro in August 2015.

Attend the Government Documents Round Table (GODORT) sessions at the ALA Annual Conference.

Done. I attended most of the GODORT sessions at ALA Annual 2015.

Fulfill my responsibilities as Member Services Director for the New Members Round Table (NMRT) of ALA, which includes supervising and supporting four NMRT committees.

Ongoing. I’m in frequent contact with the four committees that I supervise, ensuring that they are meeting expectations and deadlines. I attend their virtual meetings and also the virtual meetings for the NMRT Executive Board. My current term in this position goes until June 2016.

Become a member of OLAC (Online Audiovisual Catalogers).

Done. I joined OLAC in 2016.

Organize the Fall 2015 GODORT of Michigan conference and business meeting, per my responsibilities as Program Chair of GODORT Michigan.

Done. I successfully organized the fall conference and meeting, including finding a location, getting presenters, setting the agenda, and leading the conference/meeting.
