Standard

Goal I. Provide and maintain a collection of information resources that will support the identifiable research needs of the university community as well as those of scholars worldwide.

Continuing Objective 1: Maintain the physical collection and select/deselect appropriate materials in the areas of U.S. Federal Government, International Government, European Union, and Canadian Government.

Specific Objectives:

Review the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) selection profile before October 1 to add or remove items.

Completed a review of our profile on September 27, 2016.

Monitor IGO and NGO publications for purchase considerations not covered by approval plans.

I have been monitoring these publications and purchasing electronic copies of items not on approval plans.

Evaluate Proquest resources that pertain to U.S. federal documents and purchase databases that will enhance our collection, such as Legislative Insights 2017, historical Statistical Abstract modules, and additional Digital National Security Archive modules.

I have purchased additional Legislative Insights and Statistical Abstract modules.

Review and remove U.S. federal documents from Remote Storage, transferring items to keep to the Main Library Government Documents collection, sending unwanted items that are not owned by our Regional Library at the University of Minnesota, and properly dispose of unwanted materials per FDLP guidelines.

There are no longer any government documents in Remote Storage. With the help of staff and student employees, this was completed in the summer 2016.

Shift U.S. federal documents to accommodate the items transferred from Remote Storage.

Approximately 75% of the collection has been shifted and the items that will remain in the collection from Remote are being integrated.

Transfer the print Census collection to 1 East.

Completed on September 16, 2016.

Hire, train, and manage student employees to shelve and shift government documents material on 3 West and 1 East.

I hired and trained 3 students in the summer and have hired 1 more student in March 2017.

Goal II. Provide instructional services and personal assistance to aid library users in identifying, locating, and using resources.

Continuing Objective 1: Provide library instruction and guides related to government information.

Specific Objectives:

Provide a library instruction session about finding and using Census statistics and resources for MC 498 (Civil Engagement and Community Development in Lansing). Revise previously created libguide.

I updated the libguide and taught this course on October 6, 2016.

Provide library instruction session with Suzi Teghtmeyer for HST 201 (Food, Farming, and Nutrition) about finding and using Census statistics related to demographics and agriculture.

Suzi and I taught this course on October 13, 2016.

Provide library instruction session on laws and regulations for packaging for PKG 485 with Anita Ezzo and Breezy Silver.

The course was taught on January 30, 2017.

Provide library instruction on legislative histories for WRA 331.

The course was taught on February 23, 2017.

Provide a library instruction session for JMC Social Relations and Public Policy faculty members on statistical and government information resources.

The course was taught on March 3, 2017.

Create a research guide to help our users find information about the 2016 Presidential Election.

I completed a libguide for the Presidential Election in March 2016.

Continuing Objective 2: Promote and facilitate access to MSU Libraries resources by the creation, enhancement, organization, and maintenance of high quality catalog data.

Specific Objectives:

Catalog library resources such as video games and French Africana monographs, creating original bibliographic records, or enhancing inadequate copy catalog records, according to national and local standards and using appropriate cataloging guidelines.

I cataloged 108 items including video games in 2016-2017.

Participate in the national Video Game Genre Working Group to analyze and propose video game genres for acceptance by Library of Congress.

After analyzing a list of proposed genre terms for video games, we sent our recommendations to the Library of Congress in December 2016. This working group is currently awaiting a response from LOC before moving on to next steps.

Continuing Objective 3: Provide maximum access to resources for our users through high-quality reference services.

Specific Objectives:

Provide reference services at the Main Library Reference Desk and through virtual reference (chat and email).

I provide approximately 4-6 hours per week in reference services.

Contribute to the improvement of reference services by sharing news and information that will be helpful to other librarians and our users via reference meetings and the reference blog.

I presented two presentations on finding and using Census materials on June 2, 2016 and September 15, 2016.

Attend reference meetings and training sessions in order to increase my knowledge of researching all subject areas in order to provide more complete answers to patron questions.

I attend reference meetings as my schedule permits.

Goal III. Promote the use of the University Libraries and appropriate information resources.

Continuing Objective 1: Promote the MSU Libraries’ resources and services to the MSU community.

Specific Objective:

Promote library resources that relate to government information in my libguides , during reference interactions, and during instructions sessions, such as Simply Map for finding statistics from the Census.

The five classes that I taught this year all had an emphasis on government information and how to find it through the MSU Libraries.

Continuing Objective 2: Create exhibits that highlight both a significant event/topic and the libraries’ collection

Specific Objectives:

Create an exhibit on 3 West to highlight the 100th anniversary of the creation of the National Park Service.

This exhibit was available from May to September 2016.

Create an exhibit on 1 West to highlight the use of animals in propaganda.

Postponed indefinitely due to other priorities.

Goal IV. Participate in appropriate service, professional, and scholarly activities.

Continuing Objective 1: Explore presentation and publication opportunities.

Specific Objectives:

Submit a proposal to present on text mining/analysis to the Midwest Archives Conference.

The proposal, in collaboration with Megan Malone at MSU Archives was accepted. Our half day workshop will be on April 6, 2017 in Omaha.

Present a brown bag session with Devin Higgins on APIs.

Devin and I presented our brown bag on August 10, 2016.

Present a webinar for the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) Academy on text mining/analysis.

Webinar was presented on April 26, 2016.

Present a webinar for the North Carolina Library Association “Help! I’m an Accidental Government Information Librarian” series on APIs.

Webinar was presented on July 26, 2016.

Continuing Objective 2: Participate in conferences, classes, and training sessions to expand my knowledge.

Specific Objectives:

Complete an ALCTS course on cataloging.

I completed the Fundamentals of Cataloging on May 20, 2016.

Complete the FDLP Coordinator Certificate Program.

This program was supposed to occur in Fall 2016 but was delayed until February 2017. I should successfully finish this course in April 2017.

Attend ALA Annual and Midwinter and attend meetings related to government information and cataloging.

I attended the ALA Annual in Orlando and ALA Midwinter in Atlanta.

Attend the FDLP spring and fall conferences.

I attended the virtual FDLP Spring conference in April and the in-person Fall conference in October.

Attend the GODORT Michigan Spring conference.

I attended this conference on May 6, 2016 at the University of Michigan.

Attend webinars hosted by the FDLP Academy and NCLA Help! I’m an Accidental Government Information Librarian Series.

I attended many sessions in 2016-2017; see Part C for a complete list.

Continuing Objective 3: Remain active in local and national organizations.

Specific Objectives:

Serve as a member of the Membership Committee for the Government Documents Round Table (GODORT) of ALA.

I am currently serving in this role until July 2017.

Serve as member of the Nominations Committee for GODORT ALA (elected position).

I am currently serving in this role until July 2018.

Serve as Member Services Director for the New Members Round Table (NMRT) of ALA, which involves supervising four NMRT committees (elected position).

I am currently serving in this role until July 2018

Serve as President of GODORT Michigan.

I am President until my term expires in June 2017.
