Intellectual Property Management and Leadership Certificate Program
Center for Intellectual Property, University of Maryland University Center
September 2012- February 2013

This ten week, online continuing education certificate program consisted of two courses: one eight week, required Foundations in Copyright class and one, two week elective on Fair Use and Licensing. Because copyright is such a complex, specialized topic, this program helped me explore the intricacies of copyright law. The Fair Use and Licensing elective was especially relevant since the primary question that I was answering in my position as Assistant Copyright Librarian was “can this be considered a fair use.” Through online discussions, readings, lectures, written assignments, and a final project (see page B7), I studied copyright at length and was able to gain a firm understanding of the subject, especially fair use. This gave me confidence to more comfortably make decisions and to explain copyright issues more clearly to patrons and colleagues.
