For Endangered Data Week March 2018, Amanda Tickner and I
conducted sessions on using the Census for finding data and mapping capabilities. Resources
highlighted included American FactFinder (which is maintained by the Census Bureau), Social
Explorer, SimplyAnalytics, and PolicyMap (these resources require an MSU subscription). The
March 2018 session was well attended by current MSU students, faculty, staff, and community
patrons due to better outreach and promotion for the event. Workshop presented as part of Endangered Data Week. My part of the
presentation provided a brief overview of the Census, including a brief history,
how the data is used, and potential issues in the future of the Census. Census
data access points both free and subscription-based, and their benefits and
limitations were also covered.
