In 2026, the United States marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and its bold proclamation that “all men are created equal.” To commemorate this milestone, I created an exhibit that explores the Constitution born from that revolutionary moment: a brilliant yet imperfect living document. It celebrates the Framers’ visionary experiment in self-government while confronting its profound shortcomings—slavery enshrined, silence on women’s rights, and the exclusion of Indigenous peoples, free Black Americans, and so many others from full citizenship. Through amendments, activism, and persistent civic engagement, generations of Americans have harnessed the Constitution’s own mechanisms to expand liberty and remedy injustice, steadily moving the nation closer to its founding ideals.
